My friend Sandra

Today, my friend Sandra Stuermer became the first woman to be appointed as the Director of Administration and Finance for the North Slope Borough. Perhaps even more importantly, she is the first Alaska Native woman to hold this position.

Sandra earned her degree (in business administration or something like that – it had lots to do with business and math) from UAA. As a working mother, she used the proximity of the university to pursue her degree, taking what courses she could each semester until she achieved that four year degree. Without UAA, she would not bring the credibility to her current appointment that she does. Without UAA, she would never have been able to achieve her dream. Without UAA, how many other Alaskans will now be left behind because the opportunities for post secondary education have been so sharply curtailed.

So congrats to my friend Sandra for her amazing achievement. I just wish others would have the chance that you did.

Elise, I left my computer alone for enough time to put away the groceries that my husband brought home (1 attaboy for him). When I came back, your page was there right in front of me. So, I read a couple of your articles; the one about your $34 robe with the $55 zipper. I can relate. Purchased this beautiful robe that came together in two sizes. The left side fit and the right side was three sizes larger. Rather than return it, I proceeded to take it apart and alter the garment. Long story short, it didn’t work, but I had pretty fabric for some upcoming project that never happened. I found a nice fleece robe at Anchorage Salvation Army for $3 and am still wearing it some 30 years later.
Next I read your sad tale about University of Alaska. I’ve been somewhat following the Dunleavy rage on Alaska (still my favorite and happy place). Read today that petitions are circulating to recall the *&^@! 10,000 signatures in one day. If I lived in AK, my signature would be included! My slogans would be: “DONELeavy and DUMP tRUMP.
With fond memories of you and BTLC,
    Louise
