Flowers vs. Chicken

There was a time in my life when I wanted to receive flowers. A big bouquet of flowers. With a lovely note attached telling me I was someone very special. I wanted them to be from some tall, dark, handsome man who couldn’t live without me.

That never happened.

Now, I get a Costco chicken from one of the nicest men I know. Whenever he’s in town, he goes to Costco and, along with his groceries, he picks me up a chicken.

He isn’t tall, dark, and handsome. He’s not tall or dark. But he looks pretty handsome to me when he’s bringing that chicken up the stairs. I don’t know who loves him more at this point – me or my dogs.

Here’s the best part. He’s a friend. A really, really good friend. He’s not a romantic partner but for almost 50 years now, we’ve been friends. And, quite frankly, when he’s coming in the door with that Costco chicken, I find myself thinking that there aren’t very many men on this earth who are that kind and caring.

He deserves a good woman who will appreciate just how kind and nice he is. I hope if he finds her, she understands that I will still expect that chicken on a regular basis. She may win his love. But I won his friendship a long time ago and I’m not letting go of that.

Yep. Once it was flower. Now it’s a Costco chicken. Getting older is definitely a weird experience.
