Oiled birds R us

You’ve probably been following the adventure of the stranded Shell drilling rig Kulluk. We were lucky this time. No spilled oil. No scenes of devastation on a once pristine beach. No video of oiled birds trying to preen the oil off their feathers so they are again water proof and able to withstand their cold environment.

What you probably haven’t read about are some other groups affected by the grounding. But the reverberations do echo far and wide. They are hardly contained within any limited geographic area. I know this because I work a shift as a volunteer at Bird

Alaska flu

I have a slight case of the “it’s the middle of winter and I live in Alaska” flu, which is manifested by a slight cough, a slight sore throat, a slight headache, a slight stuffy nose and a great desire to be somewhere warm. Oh well, I’ll be going to Vegas in April. I guess I can wait.

No matter how close we might otherwise be

Last night I watched my dog, forced to choose between safeguarding his treat and his Santa, chose his Santa. And I knew then that, no matter how close we might otherwise be, we are fundamentally always going to be different.

My bucket list

As I get older, my bucket list gets shorter. We are now down to two main items. !. Before I die, I want to vote for a woman presidential candidate (preferably Hillary). 2. Before I die, I want to walk into a bakery wearing a ridiculous red hat and legally buy an Alice B. Toklas brownie.

Seriously world, is that asking too much?

Tell the truth

If your kids met their responsibilities the same way the US Congress does, you’d have them in counseling or in a very long time out, right? So I say let’s have Dr. Phil in to provide counseling to them and, if that doesn’t work, make them all sit at their desks in Congress until they promise to play well with others.

No rest for the weary

When you live with two dogs and seven big birds, you don’t get to rest when you’re sick. You just move more slowly and feel yucky while you do it. Sigh. Welcome to my annual winter “I feel like crap and don’t know why” cycle.

Wise up and legalize pot

Am I the only one who thinks it strange that alcohol is the only legal, non-prescription intoxicant allowed in our country? Given it’s history, you’d think that people would be much more willing to legalize marijuana than allow the open sale of a drug that is infamous for causing people to get violent, drive recklessly and lose all sense of morality when overindulging. Speak to most law enforcement officers and they will in all likelihood tell you that if people are going to use some mind altering substance, they’d prefer people use pot over alcohol every time.

I’ve finally outgrown them

It seems as though some door is closing on my life as I admit this, but admit it I must. I have outgrown action hero movies. Partially it’s because they all seem to be filmed without lights and I am simply unable to engage with a movie in which I am constantly hitting the rewind button in an attempt to see what just happened in the dark. For god’s sake, directors, buy a lightbulb! Partially it’s because I can only watch so many car chases before I want to rise screaming from my chair. There is simply not enough tequila

Whether we fell off that cliff or not

Whether we fell off that cliff or not, the birds at Bird TLC still need to be cleaned and fed. So I’ll spend January 1 communing with eagles and owls and swans. It beats hell out of trying to commune with Congress.
