Anchorage… Alaska’s least fashionable city and proud of it!

When I first moved to Alaska, some cynics in my family posited that I’d made the move because I’d found the only city left in America – Barrow – where there were no clothing stores so I wouldn’t have to shop. They were wrong, of course. Barrow was not the only place in America or Alaska without benefit of a clothing store. Other than that, the rest of their ruminations on my move proved to be more true than not. I considered the lack of stores in Barrow an absolute plus to the whole ambience of living in the Arctic.

It’s just wrong

It’s just wrong that it’s June and I still have to turn the furnace on in my home once a day. What the hell happened to that global warming we were promised?

Looking for something fun to do today?

This message is from Bird TLC….

We have a juvenile golden eagle that needs to go! We’ll be releasing her at Palmer Hay Flats this Sunday, June 3rd. Any and all are welcome to come. We’re planning on doing the release around 2 pm at the Cottonwood Creek Trailhead.

Here’s how to get there:

Drive into Wasilla

Turn left on Palmer-Wasilla Hwy (by Target/Fred Meyer/Johnson Tire)

Ah Donald, Donald, Donald

You are everything the world hates about America and you are everything Americans hate about themselves. You are a bloviated orange balloon like creature who will be remembered by history, if at all, as a joke.

But you do bring humor to what looks to be a very dry and humorless campaign, so I guess you have some value.

It’s awfully quiet out there

Who’d have ever thought that we’d miss the noise and spectacle that was the Republican primary? Who’d have ever thought that the Republican party, known mostly for being the party of staid, rich white dudes, could have come up with the colorful cast of characters it produced this primary season? Have we finally reached the point where Republicans might actually be as interesting and varied as Democrats?  Only time will tell if the Republican tent is large enough to encompass the entire fringe. Look how well that worked for the Democrats.

Meanwhile, I’m feeling Cain nostalgia. Give me a 6-6-6!

Of course he’s gay

Of course Sheldon from the Big Bang Theory is gay. The minute I found him hot I knew he was either gay or a mass murderer. Why should the patterns of my life change at this late stage?

Memorial Day

As a child of the sixties who lost a dear friend to the war in Vietnam, this has always been a bittersweet day for me. Now that my godchild has married a dedicated Navy EOD person, I have become even more acutely aware of how precious these young men and women are who put on a uniform and march in whatever direction those old men in Washington send them. Their sense of honor and dedication to duty is amazing. Remembering those who marched out to battle to never return is something we should do a lot more often than once

The great outdoors

I am definitely one of those people who likes the great outdoors much better when it is frozen and the bugs are all gone. But once a year, whether I need to or not, I get my hands into the soil by planting annuals in pots around the front of my house.

I like the way the flowers look when they all bloom. I like how pretty they make my house. But mostly, I like that these hardy northern varieties understand that once they are planted, they are on their own to survive at my house since I will not

They sleep in my bed and get the majority of the space.

They are allowed to perch on the back of the couch so they can see out both the front and back windows at the same time.

They get fresh chicken for breakfast and individual dishes of all organic dog meals for dinner.

They go out with Karie twice a week so they can visit and play with other dogs.

They have six leashes… one for every occasion… four harnesses and two collars each in
