Who’d have ever thought that we’d miss the noise and spectacle that was the Republican primary? Who’d have ever thought that the Republican party, known mostly for being the party of staid, rich white dudes, could have come up with the colorful cast of characters it produced this primary season? Have we finally reached the point where Republicans might actually be as interesting and varied as Democrats? Only time will tell if the Republican tent is large enough to encompass the entire fringe. Look how well that worked for the Democrats.
Meanwhile, I’m feeling Cain nostalgia. Give me a 6-6-6!
Of course he’s gay
Of course Sheldon from the Big Bang Theory is gay. The minute I found him hot I knew he was either gay or a mass murderer. Why should the patterns of my life change at this late stage?
Memorial Day
As a child of the sixties who lost a dear friend to the war in Vietnam, this has always been a bittersweet day for me. Now that my godchild has married a dedicated Navy EOD person, I have become even more acutely aware of how precious these young men and women are who put on a uniform and march in whatever direction those old men in Washington send them. Their sense of honor and dedication to duty is amazing. Remembering those who marched out to battle to never return is something we should do a lot more often than once
The great outdoors
I am definitely one of those people who likes the great outdoors much better when it is frozen and the bugs are all gone. But once a year, whether I need to or not, I get my hands into the soil by planting annuals in pots around the front of my house.
I like the way the flowers look when they all bloom. I like how pretty they make my house. But mostly, I like that these hardy northern varieties understand that once they are planted, they are on their own to survive at my house since I will not
Spoiled? Or just well loved?

They sleep in my bed and get the majority of the space.
They are allowed to perch on the back of the couch so they can see out both the front and back windows at the same time.
They get fresh chicken for breakfast and individual dishes of all organic dog meals for dinner.
They go out with Karie twice a week so they can visit and play with other dogs.
They have six leashes… one for every occasion… four harnesses and two collars each in
Here’s what being sick last week taught me
You can’t think clearly with a head full of snot.
Volunteering is a wonderful thing
Given the news we read on a daily basis, one could come to the reasonable conclusion that, as my mother would have so succinctly put it, we are going to “H E Double hockey sticks” in a hand basket and there is little to do but await the wrath of whatever deity in which you believe. Wars, murders, ethnic cleansings, famine, floods, climate change, corrupt politicians, Wall Street avarice, economic meltdown… it’s a wonder most of us have the courage to get up every morning and get on with life. But we do because we have others depending on us
Correction
In looking over yesterday’s entry, I realize that I need to make one correction. Homemade chocolate cake with chocolate icing is better than any other food this world has every produced.
Is it our caveman genes?
Why is it that food grilled outside over an open flame always tastes better than just about anything we produce in our kitchens? Seriously, is there a better food in the world than ribs grilled and basted over an open flame with a fresh salad to match?
There are two ways to wake up
There are two ways to wake up in the morning. The way Carm does and the way Bubba does. Carm leaps up, tail wagging, body wriggling, pouncing on my body, ready to start what he knows will be another exciting day. Bubba gets up slowly, blinks through sleepy eyes, tries to avoid Carm’s antics on the bed, stretches slowly, somewhere in mid-stretch simply slumps down again as though all her energy was now used up and then reluctantly allows me to pick her up and carry her downstairs to go out.
The reality is that I’m more of a Bubba
