Greta Thornberg is right

As I sit here looking out the window at a December day in Anchorage with no snow visible, temps way higher than they should be, rain in the forecast and Stellar jays still coming to my feeder, I’ve got to figure that this kid is definitely on to something.

Here’s the problem. A bunch of old white men – also known at the GOP – has decided that she is wrong and that the dramatic global climate change that is happening right in front of our faces is, in fact, nothing more than a passing moment in history. Needless to say, not one of these old men understands the difference between weather and climate change and they even less understand the science behind it all. Given that some of them believe that ectopic pregnancies can be saved and replanted in the uterus, I think we can safely say that the last science class they took involved hooking a potato up to a clock.

I will long be dead before climate change totally destroys the world we’ve known. I already see it happening when Utqiagvik registers a temperature of 20 above in December and has open water instead of shore fast ice.

We are fools to turn a blind eye and deaf ear to the warnings being shouted by every credible climate scientist in the world. But that is just what those dusty old men in the GOP are doing. And their sheep-like followers just accept their pronouncements as they listen to the drone of lies coming out of their Fox News programs.

I will be dead before the real disasters hit – before most of Florida is underwater and New Yorkers have to swim through the subway tunnels. I’ll be dead before the last snow melts from the mountains and the last iceberg disappears into the sea. I’ll be dead before the Antarctic becomes a place for fun in the sun. But our children and grandchildren won’t be.

Quite honestly, I can’t imagine what those creaking, slobbering old men will use as their defense. But then, they’ll be dead too, so they won’t care. All that is important to them is that they serve their corporate overlords well enough to revel in the high paying jobs they will get after retiring from Congress. And that they have enough money to make sure that their children will survive – yours be damned.
