Yes, James Comey’s book is self-serving and will probably make him oodles of money. But he says some things that so need to be said, things that we are almost too embarrassed to express because we want to look cool and some of the things he espouses are not “cool” in today’s DC.
Comey speaks about service to the country and not service to an individual. He speaks about how the highest office in the land should be held to the highest ethical standards, not something for which the current administration will ever win any awards. Comey speaks about loving this country enough to do what is right by it and not to be an administration whose only goal is to stroke the ego of the baby in the Oval Office.
I was raised in an immigrant family that wanted nothing more than to have their children become Americans. Our heritage, while not denied, was not encouraged a lot outside the home because Italians had faced so much discrimination in our parents’ lifetimes that they didn’t want it happening to us.
American offered my family a place where they could better their lives and watch as their children did even better and their grandchildren blew the roof off the place by becoming doctors and lawyers and engineers, oh my!
Being proud of America and what it stood for was inculcated into us from the earliest age – in my case by Salesian nuns, many of whom were also immigrants. But this current administration makes it hard to get enthused about America. Each day it drips a little more acid on America, wearing the dream away one drop at a time.
So we’ve reached the point where all too many of us have given up, shrugged at the latest crap emanating from the White House and gone back to our Words with Friends game. We are turning off and shutting down at a time when we need most to be most alert so as not to lose America. We need to demand ethics from the Oval Office. We need a spine on our Congress.
But what we mostly need is to not tune out and turn off. If we give up under the deluge of shit that is rolling downhill on us all the time, that POS currently sullying the White House wins and America becomes a footnote in history – a bold experiment that failed under the weight of the most incompetent, corrupt, self serving and vile administration to ever occupy the White House.
