Nick and the swan

image

When Nick first started volunteering at Bird TLC, most of the birds aside from redpolls were bigger than he was. But he was brave and hung in there. Now he holds swans. Touching something this wild and beautiful is like touching a piece of god. IT’s Nick’s reward for all those years when the eagles outweighed him but he never gave up.

Ulu may be small but his heart is mighty. As one of Bird TLC’s ed birds, he brings the wild to you. Just don’t try to touch his mice. You don’t mess with Ulu’s meals.

When it comes to fashion and shopping in Alaska

Here in Alaska, we are not so much current on trends and fashions as we are thrilled to find a store where we can buy our groceries, clothes, furniture and accessories without going out in the cold and re-parking the car in yet another lot. As my sister will gladly explain to you, if it weren’t for bad fashion, Alaska would have no fashion sense at all. That’s why they had to buy Sarah Palin all those new clothes when she was campaigning.

Oiled birds R us

No video of oiled birds trying to preen the oil off their feathers so they are again water proof and able to withstand their cold environment.

What you probably haven’t read about are some other groups affected by the grounding. But the reverberations do echo far and wide. They are hardly contained within any limited geographic area. I know this because I work a shift as a volunteer at Bird

Alaska flu

I have a slight case of the “it’s the middle of winter and I live in Alaska” flu, which is manifested by a slight cough, a slight sore throat, a slight headache, a slight stuffy nose and a great desire to be somewhere warm. Oh well, I’ll be going to Vegas in April. I guess I can wait.

No matter how close we might otherwise be

Last night I watched my dog, forced to choose between safeguarding his treat and his Santa, chose his Santa. And I knew then that, no matter how close we might otherwise be, we are fundamentally always going to be different.

My bucket list

As I get older, my bucket list gets shorter. We are now down to two main items. !. Before I die, I want to vote for a woman presidential candidate (preferably Hillary). 2. Before I die, I want to walk into a bakery wearing a ridiculous red hat and legally buy an Alice B. Toklas brownie.

Seriously world, is that asking too much?

Tell the truth

If your kids met their responsibilities the same way the US Congress does, you’d have them in counseling or in a very long time out, right? So I say let’s have Dr. Phil in to provide counseling to them and, if that doesn’t work, make them all sit at their desks in Congress until they promise to play well with others.
