The real dangers

The real danger is that Carm will dehydrate himself trying to pee on every inch of the back yard in order to mark it as his own. Poor little fellow. He only weighs about 7 pounds. How much pee can he possible generate?

Veterinarians needed in bush Alaska

Back in the 70’s when I was the North Slope Borough health director, a man walked into my office one day and announced he was the vet from the Naval Arctic Research Lab (NARL) down the road from town. NARL was in the process of closing its animal research facility and he was heading up the effort. But as things closed down, he found himself with extra time on his hands and wondered if there was anything he could offer in the way of his services to our community.

He had me at the word veterinarian. Barrow had an immense

If for no other reason

Having survived another full day of travel back to Alaska from the East Coast, I can only say that no matter what you think of our senators and representative in DC, you have to give them credit for having butts of steel for making that trip more than once a year without needing to be tranquillized… or maybe they are? All I know is that every time the safety announcement tells me that my seat cushion can be used as a floatation device, I simply want to scream, “Are you shittin’ me? This pillow that’s so hard on my butt

What the hell!

I thought I’d left some very specific orders that breakup was to be over before I returned to Alaska. What the hell is all this white stuff still on my lawn?

Heading home

I’m heading home to Alaska today. Seeing my family is back east is always wonderful. And I do have to thank them for keeping the weather cold while I’ve been here. But now I’m ready to get home and see my little flock and prepare my home for my new companions, Bubbles and Caramel. It’s been way too long since I heard little feet scampering up and down my stairs… well, little feet that didn’t mean Abdul had gotten out of his cage and was trying to creep over to his favorite woodwork to chew without me hearing him.

One again why I should not be allowed out in public

I was at a family funeral asked to do a reading during the mass. I was told that when I went up to the altar, I had to bow to it before going to the place to read. Well, that didn’t sit very well with me. My feelings about the Catholic Church right now are such that bowing isn’t even close to what I wanted to do. But it all became a moot point when I got up to go do the reading and realized just how big the shoes I’d borrowed from Judy were. With every step I was

Why family is wonderful to have… no matter what a pain they can sometimes be

The days between my a death and funeral are hard. When someone dies, you sometimes don’t know what to do or how you’re supposed to act or how to feel normal again. So when my aunt died, we did what we’ve always done. The family gathered and we cooked until the stove and refrigerator no longer had any room for food and then we ate a big meal that was comprised of many of the dishes we remembered most from my aunt’s kitchen. Then we sat in front of the TV and watched videos of happier times when she was

A goodbye to my Aunt Toni

My family has now lost the one aunt left of my parents’ generation. In many ways, Alzheimer’s had caused her to leave us already in spirit. Only her physical being was still bound to the limits of our mortal world. Now she’s rejoined her family in where ever it is that we go when our spirit breathes it’s last earthly breath.

And now my generation of cousins goes to the top of something I call the death chain. Until she died, there was still one person above my generation in that hierarchy. When she passed, I suddenly felt very alone
